At age 54, Herb Magley’s wife Gail was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s. Upon diagnosis, Herb turned to the Alzheimer’s Association. There he found community in a support group where he built close friendships with others on the same journey. In Herb’s words “The Alzheimer’s Association saved my life.” Herb cared for his wife throughout her 11-years living with the disease, and eventually turned his grief into action by giving back tenfold as a support group facilitator, community educator, advocate and fundraiser. “I volunteer because I see the critical need for our life-saving support groups so I continue to form them and lead them and provide a little humor for those stressed-out, worn-out caregivers. I see the value of our education programs in all the diverse communities we need to serve, so I continue to share the important resources from the Alzheimer’s Association. I see the need for change so I advocate with politicians in Oklahoma and in D.C.” In January 2024, the Alzheimer’s Association recognized Herb with the Harry Johns Award for his outstanding service to his community. Thank you to Herb, and to all our proud volunteers, for being the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association. #NationalVolunteerWeek #ENDALZ

This year’s Part the Cloud Gala raised more than $17 million to fund cutting-edge Alzheimer’s and dementia research. The Part the Cloud movement, started in 2012 by Michaela Hoag "Mikey" with the Alzheimer's Association, has invested more than $82 million in 68 groundbreaking and innovative clinical trials. Mikey’s words describe it best, “Part the Cloud has bloomed into a global research movement that has the potential to find a cure for the disease. It is more than a fundraiser, it's an opportunity to educate, inspire and provide hope to the millions of lives impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.” A special thank you to Mikey and event chairs Sue Foley and Lauren Koenig for hosting the event, which was emceed by "Suits" star Sarah Rafferty and included a musical performance by Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer Jon Batiste.

When Dr. David Mandelbaum first learned about #TheLongestDay, he was immediately intrigued. The idea of turning something he loved into a fundraiser resonated with him. This led him to create the Making Memories Classic pickleball tournament. “I could not think of a better way to honor and memorialize my parents while raising money to fight Alzheimer's disease and all dementia than by hosting a pickleball tournament as my The Longest Day fundraiser.” Read his inspiring story in honor of #PickleballMonth: https://lnkd.in/e-NWpXSx. A heartfelt thank you 💜 to Dr. Mandelbaum and all the pickleball players who serve up an impact for The Longest Day! #ENDALZ

On #NationalSiblingsDay, we’re sharing the story of brothers, Matthew Skinner and Miguel Martinez, who have lost loved ones to Alzheimer’s. The brothers, who are also known as Beard (Matthew) and Beans (Miguel) turned their brotherly rivalry into a way to raise awareness and funds for The Longest Day. Their event, Beard vs Beans “was started with a brotherly shenanigan,” says Miguel. Each year, the brothers put a new and fun punishment on the line for the brother who raises the least amount. The first several rounds went to Beans, but Beard is making a comeback! Heading into their seventh year of Beard vs Beans, the brothers’ impact continues to grow. They now host three events, including the yearly round of Beard vs Beans and two 5K/10K events. Since 2017, Beard vs Beans has raised nearly $170,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. Matthew shared that together, he and Miguel have “seen what Alzheimer’s did to our family and we want to help find a cure.” Thank you Beard and Beans, for all you do to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s by raising funds and awareness through your brotherly rivalry and love.
