Agritourism is booming as more people are becoming interested in where and how food is produced. As a younger generation of farmers are now becoming leaders in the business, social media is also being used to educate people, often in humorous ways, who are removed from the food production process. A local Lindsborg family is using both agritourism and social media to bring people into their lives to show how their products are being produced and bringing awareness about the modern day farmer.
The Peterson Farm Bros are made up of Greg (24), Nathan (21), Kendal (18), and honorary "bro" Laura (14) Peterson. They produce entertaining and educational videos on their YouTube channel (ThePetersonFarmBros) and post continuous farming and video updates to their social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and Blog). Ever since they began producing content, they have continued to realize a need to inform people about what they do in farming and in agriculture as a whole. There are many misconceptions about today's farmers and they feel it is their calling to help correct some of those misconceptions. Aside from their production on social media, the brothers travel around the country to perform and speak on advocating for agriculture. They also blog about misunderstood topics in agriculture and open up their farm for tours. Through all of this they hope to educate the general public on where food comes from and what a real Midwest family farm looks like.
About the Videos:
The Peterson Farm Bros YouTube channel began in November of 2011 with a video featuring their whole family called "Wheat Harvest on a Real Family Farm in Kansas." In May of 2012, Greg had an idea to make a parody music video with his brothers to help educate their city friends about farming. The video was filmed throughout the month of June and posted at the end of the month. It was entitled "I'm Farming and I Grow It," and was a parody of the song "I'm Sexy and I Know It" by LMFAO. The song was a viral hit on YouTube and received over 5 million views in over 200 countries in two weeks. Since then, they have continued to make videos and have produced eight total parodies and many other videos about life on the farm.
About the Farm:
The Peterson farm is a fifth generation family farm. Their Swedish ancestors homesteaded the land in the 1800s and they still farm on this same land today. Raising beef cattle in a backgrounding feedlot operation is their primary business. They also grow corn, alfalfa, and forage sorghum as feed for the cattle and cultivate wheat, milo and soybeans for cash crops. Join them for a tour of their farm this summer.
