Artist and TED Fellow Jae Rhim Lee will give a presentation about her art at the Salina Art Center, Thursday, November 5, 7-8:30 p.m. Lee's work is included in the exhibition "Rooted in Soil," organized by the DePaul Art Museum, DePaul University and currently on view at the Art Center. Sarah Crews, director of the Heart Land Prairie Cemetery, the first all-natural burial ground in Kansas, will join Lee for a portion of the presentation.
Lee will speak about her Infinity Burial Project, an initiative that seeks to reduce the human body's impact on the environment after burial through the use of the Infinity Burial Suit. This garment is infused with spores from the Infinity mushroom, a strain of mushroom Lee has cultivated to facilitate decomposition and remediation of toxins remaining in the body after death.
This event is part of First Thursday, Salina's monthly art crawl. Beforehand, there will be refreshments and music by Sarah and Tim Crews in the Art Center's Education Wing, 5-6:30 p.m.
Lee's Infinity Burial Project received widespread attention following her 2011 TED Talk "My mushroom burial suit." Lee holds a BA in psychology from Wellesley College and an MS in visual studies from MIT. In 2014-15 she was a fellow at the Hasso Platner Institute of Design, Stanford University. Currently Lee is the CEO of Coeio, a company she co-founded to develop the Infinity Burial Suit and related products.
Jae Rhim Lee's appearance is in partnership with the Heart Land Prairie Cemetery. "Rooted in Soil" and related programming is sponsored by The Land Institute.
